And all of I sudden I’m seriously considering a Jeep CJ7 or YJ . Help?
Basically, I drive a ton. I bought my Tacoma which I plan on keeping a very long time in December and am already about to hit 20,000 miles(Half year/20k update in progress) . I let myself start looking for something somewhat reliable and economical that’ll also be fun in the corners to drive some days to save some gas/reduce miles but mostly as a toy because I miss having a decent back road car.
But... I also want to build my skills/confidence off road without stretching my comfort zone in my new daily driver that I want to keep for a long time. And if anything, something that eats some of my trail miles will slow wear on the Taco more than something that eats more of my commuting miles, right??
If I’m honest it’s just because I’ve always wanted an old-school Jeep and where most of the CJs I see are either beat to hell, too pristine, or built into a rock-crawling monster that I don’t want, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is the perfect trail-condition rig I could get behind with the level of upgrades I want at a decent price. Save me from myself Oppo!!
Also I recently acquired a place with a two car garage and an empty spot that’s just begging to be filled

if you plan off road only the leaf spring jeeps are great.
If you plan to drive it too then i would look for a TJ with the 4.0
but rust is a jeep killer, take a good look at frames, cause they become Swiss chee se very quick.

I’m not planning on getting a trailer and towing it to the trails or anything so like it’ll see some road use but it’s really a toy for trails and puttering around in if it’s nice out . If a trip’s long enough that comfort is a big worry I’d probably be taking the Tacoma over a high-mile TJ anyway if only for reliability and room for stuff / people.
The guy says the only rust is a little on the passenger kicker panel, they don’t salt the roads much if ever in the PNW so I believe him but of course I always check.

CJs have turned the corner from cheap to desirable. I owned three and never paid more than 1500 for one. Now, they are all over the place. If the one in the ad doesn’t need a lot of work, it’s a decent buy . They are fun, basic pieces of equipment. Knobs and cables for the heater, metal dash. I DD them for a few years. Not bad but not great for long trips. I had one that, in addition to the high/low transfer case, had three forward gears and two reverse. Gotta assume that wasn’t factory, but that one would only go 65 mph (forward). Plus is the windshield folds with two knobs, but you’ll probably keep the hardtop on if you’re in the PNW. I say NP - give it a try. If you don’t break anything you can get your money back out of it.
YJs don’t seem to be around much, I had one, which I liked, but as stated below, if you’re going modern you can probably get a TJ for similar money and have a better setup. I just helped my brother buy one. Good condition, 130k Miles, 4.0 six cylinder. Wound up paying 4,000 for it and all it really needed was tires.

CJ7 frames are weaker than the YJ frame. It’ s common to see cj7 bodies on YJ frames. 91 and up YJ feature the highout 4.0 inline 6. 95 is best year with galvanized body. The 2.5 is slow but it moves the jeep if you’re not in a hurry.

Hardtop would be off more than you think, what people misunderstand about the PNW is it’s beautiful mid-June to early-October and the rest of the year it rains often but not much . It just drizzles, never pours so especially through the fall and spring a bikini top is actually fine for the most part . One of my buddies had a CJ7 in high school and the first winter after buying it didn’t even own a hard or soft top for it, just a bikini top and you actually stayed pretty much dry in the front. B ack seat was a different story because the bikini top sprayed all the water straight into the faces of anyone unlucky enough to be sitting there.
The guy said the only work it could need is the bit of rust on the passenger kick if I want to take care of it. Outdoor activities being as popular as they are here the only TJs under 7k are beat, 2.5L or both, I see YJs around but similar price to this for similar condition, maybe a bit more even actually

I know these things but CJs just do something for me YJs don’t, not that I’m not also open to a YJ at the right price. Around here a 4.0 YJ that doesn’t need attention seems to be more towards $7k and a $4k or $5k example would probably be at $7k for tires and odds and ends before I’d be comfortable taking it on the trails, if this fits what the owner’s told me it’s good to go.
Also, I’m not in a hurry but really kinda want a straight 6

I do miss it but want nothing to do with a 3VZ ever again. I like wrenching but not when I can’t see or reach anything at all.

I want a YJ so badly

I would probably jump at the right YJ as well but I seem to have come down with a series CJ lust for some reason

I had an ‘86... 258, T5, D44... I hate myself for selling it. It was so awesome.

An understandable condition!

I think you answered your questions in he comments. Sounds like a CJ is the right pick, for the nostalgia at a minimum. Seriously, they are fun to drive and work on, parts are plentiful, and you can get your money out of them when you’re done. I bought my red CJ with a hardtop and used a bikini top all summer. It’s a fine plan. As you said, the front seat passengers don’t get that wet in the rain.
As far as rust, they make patch panels for the entire body. As long as the frame is solid, I wouldn’t worry too much about body rust. I owned one that had a huge hole in the passenger footwell. I figure the PO must have parked it in a way that all the water collected in that spot. JC Whitney (this was like 1994) sold me a patch and one Saturday with a grinder and a borrowed welder and I was in business.
Good luck! I’m a bit jealous.

One of us, One of us, gooble gobble, gooble gobble.
It’s too late for you, t here’s no going back. If you’re up for a road trip take a look at markets in Central Texas.

I wish, I just don’t have the time to do that road trip properly. I’m down for an adventure but only get 10 PTO days a year and don’t want to be pulling 500 mile days in a CJ, especially an unfamiliar one

Bah, where’s your sense of fun and adventure. Fly down, buy the vehicle, hit Harbor Fright to buy tools, and pray, pray like you’ve never prayed before.

It’s not that so much as I’d rather buy one up here even if it means paying a bit more and having extra days to spend enjoying it off road than burn three days on the interstate to save a few bucks best case, while running the risk of it not making it at all and end up costing me more when I need to stash it somewhere, fly home to make it to work and burn another long weekend driving down with my truck to retrieve it.
I’ve hit a weird point in my life where I can burn some money but time is a precious commodity.
